New guidelines for faculty maternity and parental leave, effective July 1, 2006
Given that Harvard expects a high level of performance from their faculty, it is critical that the University provide effective policies, benefits and services that help faculty achieve while meeting their family responsibilities. Faculty "quality of life," or how faculty across the University feel about their workload, professional climate, opportunities, ability to manage work and personal responsibilities, and overall satisfaction with the Harvard environment, impacts career success. Given that high quality is crucial to a successful academic career, the University has many policies and offers many benefits to address work-life issues.
In 2007, Harvard University was named one of the "100 Best" Organizations by Working Mother Magazine for the fifth year in a row. It was the only university and one of only three Massachusetts employers so honored. Its award-winning benefits and policies for working parents include: comprehensive health and dental insurance for employees and their families; child and eldercare benefits; and housing and transportation assistance. The Office of Faculty Development and Diversity is currently working with the Vice President of Human Resources to ensure that faculty and staff are equally benefiting from our current work-life policies and programs.
Each School at Harvard has a local Human Resources site, and there is an Office of Human Resources for Central Administration. All of these sites may be accessed through the Harvard Intranet or HARVIE. However, to access HARVIE you must have a Harvard Identification number. If you are in the process of becoming a new faculty member at Harvard you may obtain your Harvard identification number after your appointment paperwork is complete.
