Women, Science, and Society Seminar Series

The Harvard Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (HGWISE) group has worked closely with the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to create a seminar series featuring prominent women scientists and social scientists whose research examines the relationship between gender and science.

The series began on October 3, 2006 with a lecture by Dr. Charis Thompson. Dr. Thompson is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Gender and Women's Studies and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley, and Co-Director, Science, Technology, and Society Center.

On October 19, 2006 Dr. Phoebe Leboy, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, delivered a talk entitled “Analyzing the Leaky Pipeline: Why are Women Scientists Under-represented in Senior Positions?” Her presentation is available here.

Dr. Lorna Gibson's Novemeber 16 presentation discussed issues of gender in engineering. Gibson is the Matoula S. Salapatas Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Joan Steitz, Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University delivered her talk, entitled “Lupus, Snurps, and Women in Science," on December 1.

Dr. Anne Fausto-Sterling explored the role of women in the sciences in her talk, "Race, Gender, Science -- Still Questions After All These Years," on February 15. The Harvard University Gazette covered the talk. Fausto-Sterling is a professor of biology and gender studies in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Brown University.

The most recent speaker was Lotte Bailyn, a professor of management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management and the co-author of Beyond Work-Family Balance: Advancing Gender Equity and Workplace Performance. She delivered her talk on March 8.

Spring 2007 speakers included:

Elizabeth Watkins, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology, History, and Social Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

Margrit Betke, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Boston University and Research Scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
