Research Enabling Grants

The Research Enabling Grants program (REG) is a pilot program intended to provide scholars with financial support to enable research that would otherwise suffer due to significant child care or adult dependent care obligations. REG provides funding for tenure-track faculty and benefits-eligible postdoctoral fellows who are primary caregivers.*

These competitive 1-year grants are for up to $75,000 and may be used for the following purposes:

The program’s goal is to support scholars who have the potential to become tenured faculty. Successful applications will describe:

There are two funding rounds for academic year 2008. The application deadlines are:

March 3, 2008

*Please note that among HMS faculty and postdoctoral fellows, only those based primarily in the Quad's basic and social science departments are eligible. Faculty and postdocs based in the HMS-affiliated hospitals and research centers are not eligible.

**Funds used to pay for dependent care or travel is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service.

REG awards are not subject to University or School overhead assessments.

If funded, REG recipients are expected to participate in a comprehensive assessment on the how the REG award contributed to their professional development.

a. Letter of support

Faculty applicants - please provide a letter from your department or division head. The letter should address:

  • the applicant's current work
  • the applicant's future potential for scholarly work and advancement in their field
  • why the department or division cannot cover the applicant's request

Postdoctoral fellow applicants - please provide a letter from your PI. The letter should address:

  • the applicant's current work
  • whether the applicant is committed to a career in university research and teaching
  • why the lab and/or department cannot cover the applicant's request

b. Plan for using the award, including a specific description of the project to be funded and a research plan detailing your current work and work to be accomplished during the grant year.

As stated in the program overview, the REG program is intended to provide scholars with financial support to enable research that would otherwise suffer due to significant child care or adult dependent care obligations. Please provide a detailed budget and justification statement that describes why you require an REG award to fund your proposed items.

Faculty applicants - please provide a list of all grants currently supporting your work (including the amount of each grant and the percent effort). Please also list all other grants you have applied for in the last year and indicate the status of each grant.

Postdoctoral fellow applicants - please provide a list of all grants currently supporting your PI's lab (including the amount of each grant).
