Internal Funding Opportunities

In a continuing effort to enhance the information available to Harvard’s Faculty, the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity (FD&D) regularly posts information regarding University-funded research funding opportunities on our website. The content of this page will be updated frequently. We invite you to visit this page often for the most up to date announcements. Please note that larger University-funded opportunities are listed on seperate pages in the menu to the left.

Harvard China Fund Faculty Grants

The purpose of the China Fund is to support interdisciplinary research and teaching about and in China, focus Harvard’s considerable strengths in the field towards directly tackling challenges that face China; and improve communication and collaboration between Harvard’s Faculties and Schools and Chinese universities and research institutes.

Proposals may be in any field, but preference will be given to those projects that are interdisciplinary and novel. Priority will be given to projects that advance the research goals of Harvard faculty or improve the education of Harvard students. Collaborative projects which have the potential to be supported financially by Chinese universities or other relevant institutions are welcome. Harvard China Fund expects to fund several proposals at the $150,000 to $250,000 range, and encourages applicants to consider this support as seed money or to seek matching funds.

The competition is open to all Harvard faculty at the assistant, associate or full professorial rank who will be continuing at the University in that capacity for the duration of the project and who can demonstrate the endorsement of their school, department, or program for this project. Preliminary proposals including a one-page project summary and one-page preliminary budget are due at the beginning of March each year.

PITFs help faculty identify and implement appropriate technological solutions to meet pedagogic goals and to enhance the teaching and learning in a course, with a principal focus on the creation or conversion of digital content. The PITF program seeks to facilitate broad and pedagogically meaningful applications of technology to teaching and learning across the curriculum. For more information or to apply for PITF assistance, please contact Kristin Lofblad, Manager of Instructional and Research Technology (kristin_lofblad@gse.harvard.edu).

Technology Development Accelerator Fund

The Technology Development Accelerator Fund was established to overcome what is known as the “development gap,” a classic obstacle or limitation of academic research which may prevent such research from reaching fruition and translation. Through the Accelerator, we hope to expedite the development of greater numbers of investment- and venture-grade technologies, thereby increasing the flow of Harvard-originated technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace.

Harvard Center for the Environment Faculty Research Funding

The Center awards faculty seed grants to support preliminary explorations of environmental issues that show promise for further scholarship. The awards are intended to seed exciting and innovative projects that could not otherwise be tackled. They are available through a competition open to all Harvard faculty members, regardless of any past affiliation with the Center. A portion of the funding will be reserved for faculty members who have not done prior environmental research. The Center has awarded 26 faculty seed grants since 2003 worth a total of $800,000.
