Harvard offers several health coverage options, which provide flexibility and quality of care for employees and their dependents, spouses, and qualified domestic partners (same- and opposite-sex).
Based on your individual needs, you may choose a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Point of Service (POS) or, for those living outside of Massachusetts, a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan. Please sign into HARVie to gather additional information about the various health covderage options offered by the Univeristy.
When it’s time to select your primary care physician (PCP), the Physician Profile System provides information about registered physicians including their education, awards, publications, disciplinary records, hospital affiliations and plan participation.
Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) is a comprehensive health care facility in Holyoke Center, with satellite clinics at Harvard’s business school, law school, and medical school. Specialty services plus laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and an optical shop are available at the Holyoke site.
Employees who participate in HUGHP HMO or POS and have selected a PCP at HUHS can visit any HUHS clinic for in-network coverage. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Regardless of your insurance provider, HUHS can provide urgent care 24 hours a day, every day. All benefits-eligible employees of Harvard, including those not enrolled in medical coverage sponsored by Harvard, may use HUHS urgent care services for needs that arise while at work as long as the onset of the illness or injury occurred within the previous 24 hours.
There is a $25 copayment for urgent care services for faculty and staff not enrolled in insurance plans accepted by HUHS. After urgent care treatment, you will be directed to your PCP for follow-up services.
If you are injured at work and seek medical assistance at HUHS, there is no $25 copayment. Your injury will be treated as a Workers’ Compensation claim.
Harvard provides prescription coverage through Medco, a leading pharmacy benefit manager, at no additional cost. When you enroll in Harvard-sponsored medical coverage you automatically receive instructions for prescription services and your plan card(s). Medco's website can help you compare plans, explore your options and find participating pharmacies.
The HUHS pharmacy can fill prescriptions for HUHS patients, and it features low-priced non-prescription items and consultation services for anyone with a Harvard ID. You can find it on the ground floor of Holyoke Center.
